School Leavers

Ambitious, hard-working and driven? These are all qualities held by a Barnes Roffe accountancy trainee.

Our training scheme for school leavers is designed with the specific purpose of giving you the best of both worlds: fast access to credible learning opportunities and the consideration to allow you to focus on what’s important – your studies, whilst at the same time offering hands on client experience.

Qualification can be achieved in as little as three years although four to five years is more typical for those entering training contracts straight from school.

We would generally prefer our trainees first to study for the Association of Accounting Technicians AAT qualification and move onto ACA courses immediately thereafter. This is a slightly gentler introduction to the training than in some organisations. In our view the greater emphasis that this allows on practical experience early on pays massive dividends in the more demanding examinations at final level.

Our school leavers can, by their own efforts, create a real difference to the service we offer our clients.

Very often, in larger organisations, trainees can feel lost in a vast ocean of departmental structures and administrative red tape. At Barnes Roffe, you will quickly find that your contribution is not only highly valued but crucial.

As a forward thinking and innovative firm we are looking for the very best school leavers who will help with our continued growth, success and reputation for delivering an outstanding service to our clients.

So if you are interested in becoming a Chartered Accountant but do not wish to go to university first, why not consider joining our team at Barnes Roffe. Our commitment to your training is second to none because we know the young people of today are going to be the energy and lifeblood of the firm of tomorrow.

If you wish to apply for our School Leaver Trainee programme and are studying for at least 3 A levels, or the equivalent thereof and have 6 GCSEs grad B or above, including English and Maths, please send your CV to one of our recruitment team using the Careers Contact Form on this page.

Alfie Bush: My journey from school leaver
to Audit Manager

After leaving school in 2010, I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in accounting as I have always enjoyed maths and economics. I also wanted to start working as soon as possible as I wanted to take a more hands on approach. I decided the best route for me would be the AAT to ACA fast track option, which enables me to be AAT and ACA qualified in 4 years. So in September 2011 after attending college for a year and achieving my level 2 and 3 in AAT I applied for Barnes Roffe and to my delight I got the job.

I started off in an accounts assistant role which gave me great early experience and knowledge of the profession. Whilst working I attended college two evenings in the week which continued for a year. So after two years of studying and exams I became a member of the association of accounting technicians in early 2013. After that I progressed on to the ACA and with support from Barnes Roffe and the team it has been a smooth transition from my role as an Accounts Assistant to Audit Junior, Audit Semi Senior, Audit Senior and now within just seven years of joining I am very proud to be an Audit Manager.

Barnes Roffe has enabled me to increase my experience in the field immensely and provided the support and structure needed to make life as easy as possible when it comes to the exams. There is also a great relationship between colleagues in the office and I know that whenever a trainee needs help they can ask anyone in the office be it a partner or another audit junior.

One of the best aspects about Barnes Roffe is their continued commitment to my professional development.

I joined Barnes Roffe having completed my ACA graduate training at a small family firm. Despite the incredible work experience I acquired there, I felt I needed to expand my experience and take advantage of the greater opportunities that Barnes Roffe offered me.

One of the best aspects about Barnes Roffe is their continued commitment to my professional development. As well as giving me hands- on experience with clients in a multitude of different industries, their regular internal and external training courses to ensure I’m up to date with the latest developments in the key areas of audit, accounts and tax. This is backed up by my managers and partners who really know their subject and together this has made a real difference to the quality of my work.

The firm is full of fun and friendly individuals who are always happy to offer support and advice, even outsideof work we regularly socialise and organise events to relax and have fun together after a busy week.
