Intestacy is not a dirty word… but should be avoided
Drawing up your will features high on the list of things you might wish to postpone to a later date along with going to the dentist. However, it is usually not as painful as a visit to the dentist and is probably the best gift in itself that you could leave your loved ones.

For married couples, the nil-rate band for inheritance tax was effectively doubled last year, meaning that IHT is only an issue when your combined assets are worth more than £650,000. But it’s surprising how quickly you can get over that amount.

The Wife Gets Everything…
A lot of people assume that if they die, their spouse will get everything. That isn’t how it works at all. If you’re a married man with a wife and kids, your wife will only get the first £250,000 of your estate. She’ll get a right to income only in half of the rest.

Gone With the Wind?
Scarlett O’Hara famously declared: “Death, taxes and childbirth! There’s never any convenient time for any of them.” How right she was – and when it comes to IHT, death and taxes come together. IHT isn’t just inconvenient, it’s downright indefensible.
