CaseWare Charity Cup – 14th July 2019
On the quiet Sunday morning of 14th July, 9 unsuspecting members of the Barnes Roffe Rovers football team, stepped out on to the 4g pitches at K Sports Cobdown (home of the Kent FA) to warm up. Hoping for a better performance than the previous year, and with a much change team, we headed out for our first game of the Caseware Charity Cup 2019!
8 games later, with a record of 5W, 2D and 1L we finished 2nd in our group behind Creaseys. A quick rest and some dutch courage over lunch sent us into the afternoon feeling more confident. A closely contested semi-final against MFW saw the Rovers scrape through with a nervy 1-0 finish, delighted be in the running for a medal this year.
Into the final against Chavereys and another closely contested match, with both goalkeepers earning their wages that month with a number of good saves. In the end a poor decision by Chavereys defenders resulted in a penalty, which was coolly slotted away by our captain on the day, John Doyle. It was a goal that saw him win player of the tournament and the Rovers bring home the trophy.
Expectations will be high next year!
Team on the Day: James Aylwin, James Downing, George Perry (Leytonstone Office), Matt Gilbertson, Dzung Tran, John Doyle, Jamie Allen (guest), Duncan Bealey, Matthew Keetley
