As someone that has very recently had the pleasure of walking down the aisle, the constant question that nags us all is: “Are there any tax benefits of getting married?” Ok, I agree that is possibly the last thing on people’s minds, though it is a question that is commonly asked.

Tax evasion hotline?
An article in Saturday’s Times newspaper caught my eye and reminded me of one thing about my time as a Tax Inspector. The article was about HMRC’s ‘Tax Evasion Hotline’ which they have set up to receive calls from members of the public regarding suspected tax-evasion.

Iceland goes to Florida
A few weeks ago, I presented a seminar on benefits that can be given to employees free of tax and NIC and by coincidence, I found myself reading in The Times that Iceland (the supermarket chain, not the country) has run into trouble with the Taxman over just such an issue.

HMRC have denied targeting local sports clubs after a small town cricket club was sent a tax bill of over £14,000. Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club, an amateur Hertfordshire team with an annual income of around £21,000, received the bill after the Revenue carried out a review of the club’s tax affairs in 2012.
