Taxman gets tougher…..
A story reported recently in the national press is a clear example of the new tough line HM Revenue & Customs are adopting. A self-employed individual without an accountant calculated that he had overpaid £3,000 in tax for the year ending 5 April 2009 and made a repayment claim.

Stop Press on Furnished Holiday Lets!
As you are probably aware, Labour planned to scrap the beneficial treatment of furnished holiday lets (“FHL”) from 6 April 2010. Under the existing rules, FHL were treated as a trade allowing losses to be set against other income and with other tax advantages. But this only applied to UK properties.

The (tax) Inspector Calls…
HMRC have had a good run of late. 300 banks have been ordered by the tax tribunal to disclose details of offshore accounts held by their UK resident clients. Last year, they obtained a similar ruling against the big 5 high street banks.
