Now that most firms of Accountants can breathe with the 31 January self-assessment deadline behind us, HMRC have announced the stats for this year.
Apparently a record number of self-assessment returns were filed by the 31 January 2019 deadline (10,833,177 out of a total of 11,564,363 which were due) = 94% were filed on time and over 90% were filed online (this will no doubt only increase).
However, this does mean that the number of taxpayers missing the deadline remains high at 731,186 (with the likelihood of receiving an automatic £100 late filing penalty).
Not that those who filed their returns left it to the last minute, 735,258 returns were filed on 31 January with the peak filing hour being 16:00-17:00!
I get the feeling people were keen to get home on time that day………………….
There is no reason why your tax return should be filed so late, so do feel free to contact us at Barnes Roffe if we can help you with this.
