The Government has recently reported that out of the four million married civil partnered couples, about a million have not yet claimed their marriage allowance which can be worth up to £238 per year. If one of the couple is a non-taxpayer up to £1,190 of their personal allowance (currently £11,850 per annum) can be transferred to their partner.
This Marriage Allowance was introduced in April 2015 and if it has not yet been claimed, it can be backdated by completing a simple form online. Couples have four years to claim their backdated allowance (worth up to £662 in total).
If you think that you may be affected by the above and are unsure of what needs to be done, please contact your Barnes Roffe partner for further guidance.
